Stay Secure - What to Move Yourself

Moving is a stressful time, and hiring movers can be a great way to alleviate that stress. You don’t have the hassle of begging friends and family to show up and load up 8,000 cars with all of your goods, only to have things get lost and broken in the process. Movers can be a great, and largely trustworthy way to get your stuff from your old digs to your new.

There are, however, always things you should move on your own, and that you should never trust another person to move for you. Consider these important things to move yourself, as opposed to the movers, to protect and secure your fragile and valuable and precious belongings.

Things to Move Yourself
No matter how reputable the movers are, with whom you’re working, there are certain things to move yourself. These include substances that might be dangerous to the movers, which can spoil, or which have any kind of real value, either sentimental or financial. Let’s look at a few specific things.

1) Chemical Compounds
Any chemicals that you’re moving, you should move yourself. These can include weed sprays, fertilizers, gasoline, kerosene and aerosol sprays. All of these can be not only toxic, but flammable and this can be disastrous for those chemicals that are stored in the high heat of moving trucks in the middle of the summer.

2) Food Items
Food that is improperly sealed or perishable can create a mess for movers. It’s much better to move them yourself, or better yet, donate them to a local food pantry and start fresh at your new home. It should be clarified that this includes alcohol. Your moving company may not permit the transportation of alcohol—many have strict policies about this, especially if moving across state lines.

3) Important Papers
Keep your important papers, like your social security number, your birth certificate, passport, medical documents, tax paperwork and the like under lock and key, and within your grasp at all times. Losing these is like an invitation to identity theft.

4) Jewelry and Valuables
Keep your jewelry and other valuables out of the hands of strangers at all times. No matter how reputable the company, expensive jewelry and the like can be an irresistible temptation. Even if that’s not the case, the risk of it simply getting lost or broken is too great. Do you really want your collection of Depression glass shattered by accident?

5) Practical Necessities
Anything that you’re likely to pack last, and thus need first, you should move yourself. This can include prescription medications, toiletries, device chargers, clean sheets, matches, flashlight, a small tool case, coffee pot and a couple mugs, and all the other must-haves that you’ll need right away as you’re getting settled.
