Moving in with Your Spouse

Congratulations on finally tying the knot! Before you embark on your new married life, you need to prepare yourself for a big change. Moving in with a spouse can be exciting but stressful at times, so be prepared to make the best of it. The first few nights will probably be exciting no matter what, but this commitment is for life, so get ready for the long haul.

Build your love nest into something you both can enjoy equally. Be ready to compromise, and never forget that you and your spouse are equally important. If the change seems overwhelming, don’t worry. Follow the three Cs of moving in with a spouse, and you’ll have a great time making this transition.

Communicate
Like your relationship overall, the most important factor is communication. If you’ve never lived with your spouse before, you need to learn their schedule and daily habits. Being caught off guard can only lead to more problems. Make sure your expectations of one another are stated clearly from the beginning, and remember to be reasonable.

For example, if your spouse works from home on Saturdays while you have that day off, be courteous and don’t make too much noise while they’re working. That includes watching TV too loudly. Additionally, if you plan to have some friends over, give your spouse fair warning, so they can prepare other plans if they don’t want to be involved.

Clean
If you haven’t noticed already, it’s likely one of you is tidier than the other. The tidier one will also typically have higher expectations of cleanliness, so the other needs to make sure to meet those. Unless it gets into the obsessive category, be willing to put in some extra effort into cleaning to meet those expectations. Odds are, you’ll feel better too.

You might have an unpleasant realization on the other side as well. It’s possible you discover that your spouse’s clean apartment you always visited before the marriage was always cleaned right before you came over, and kept in less than desirable condition when you weren’t there. Be sure to communicate with your spouse that cleanliness is important and both of you should contribute when you can. Just remember to never keep score — no one wins when you fight over the dishes.

Calculate
Moving in together isn’t free. Someone has to pay the bills, so you need to decide beforehand how the payments are going to be split. Too many marital spats are because of finances, but you can avoid a majority of them if you’re both on the same page with money. Make sure you reach an agreement before the bills start rolling in. If one of you wants to pay utilities and internet while the other covers rent, make sure you’re both in agreement first.

Budgeting is essential to making a reliable financial plan. Be sure to prioritize what’s truly important, like car payments over investing in a hot tub. Be ready to compromise with your spouse and focus on necessities first. Plus, the more you organize your finances from the start, the more you'll be able to responsibly set aside funds for fun, like a romantic weekend getaway.
